Through our early childhood mental health programs, staff members
consult with and guide both parents and educators on child
development issues. This work has several facets: individual
parent-child therapy sessions; consultations in schools; trauma
therapy; consultations at women's shelters; and play groups.
-
Through individual parent-child therapy sessions, JFCS/East Bay
staff helps parents understand their child's temperament,
behaviors, and development, all with the goal of facilitating
closer relationships. These consultations can be home-based,
making the service more accessible for low-income families in
need.
-
At school sites, our staff advises administrators on program
development; provides teacher and parent training on child
behaviors and interventions; and assists teachers and parents
with child-specific issues. We serve Jewish preschools, Oakland
Head Start facilities, the Berkeley/Albany Head Start preschool,
an Even Start literacy program, and several Oakland Unified
School District preschools for low-income students.
-
Through our Family Justice Center office, JFCS/East Bay provides
counseling and case management services for families that have
been exposed to domestic violence, with a focus on young children
who have experienced trauma and violence.
-
JFCS/East Bay recently received a grant that has enabled us to
provide mental health consultations for children at two local
women's emergency shelters. This new service is an amazing
opportunity to assist an underserved population.
-
At our Family Justice Center office, JFCS/East Bay offers mommy and me groups for Latina mothers. These developmental and play groups are moderated by staff members and provide the mothers with support and information.
